Hortense Whitney transitioned from this earthly life on Friday, July 28, 2023 at home surrounded by her loving family at the age of 98. Hortense was born in Norwalk, CT to the late Fannie E. Boyer and Arthur Boyer. She was the eldest of five girls. Preceded in death by her sisters, Marguerite Fuller of Norwalk, CT, Adrienne Landrum of Boston, MA and Virginia Stradford of Norwalk, CT, and her loving husband of 50 years, Edward R. Whitney. Affectionately called, “Aunt Hortie” by her family, she was a faithful member of St Paul AME Church, Cambridge, MA. When she moved to Norwalk, CT in the late 80’s she then became a faithful member of Bethel AME church, Merwin and Academy Street, Norwalk, CT where she served on several committees. One of her greatest joys was delivering Meals on Wheels to her community, knitting and crocheting was equally joyful for her to share with others. She loved to travel and especially looked forward to “The Big E” every year. She was employed by various companies throughout her career and eventually retired from Pathmark in Norwalk, CT. She leaves to cherish her memory her baby sister, Jean Smith, formerly of Norwalk, CT, many nieces and nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at 12:00 PM. Bethel A.M.E Church, 19 Academy Street, Norwalk. CT. Family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until time of service at the church. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Avenue, Norwalk.
