Laura S. Blackwell, age 86, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, April 11, 2024. She was married to the love of her life, the late Louis F. Blackwell, for 50 years. Her siblings—Theodore “Bubba” Stewart and Almeta Stewart Jacobs predeceased her.
Born March 18, 1938, in Camden, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Bernice and Theodore Stewart. In her early childhood, she relocated to Norwalk, Connecticut where she attended the Norwalk Public Schools, graduating from Norwalk High School. Laura continued her education at the University of Connecticut, graduating with a Bachelor Degree.
Laura was employed as an Educational Counselor for CONNTAC EOC at the Norwalk Community College where she dedicated over 25 years of service supporting high school students in their pursuit of higher education. She was a former Executive Director of the Save the Children Federation Domestic Urban Program. She also served the community through the American Red Cross. She loved sewing, had a passion for fashion, helping others, music and always stressed the importance of education.
Laura was a committed, faithful, and dedicated member of Bethel AME Church. She served in several ministries: Pastor’s Aide, Social Action, Class Leaders, and as Women’s Day Chair for 10 years. Those left to cherish her memory: a daughter, Audrey (Eugene) Lowery; stepson, Elgin Blackwell; a surrogate daughter, Paulette Powell; three grandchildren, Sydney Lowery, Gene Travis Lowery and Kiki Blackwell; two great grandchildren, Natavious Blackwell and Kiyan Blackwell; two special nephews, Aaron Stewart and Wayne Jacobs; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Bethel AME Church, 19 Academy Street, Norwalk CT. Family gathering will being at 10:00 AM until time of memorial service at the church. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Avenue, Norwalk, CT.
