Obituary of Sigby Gene Newton

Sigby Gene Newton, 80, of Norwalk, CT, departed this life on Thursday, November 12, 2020. He was born on June 25, 1940 in Edgecombe County, Tarboro, NC, to Thomas Newton and Martha Ann Mitchell. Although his first name is Sigby, he preferred to use his middle name, Gene. Gene was the eldest of his two siblings. In 1958, Gene moved to Norwalk, CT. He met Mary Ann Brickhouse in 1963. They were married on June 8, 1999, until Mary passed on October 25, 2020. Gene worked at the Hat Corporation for three years and at the Norwalk Hospital for over 30 years as a custodian until his retirement. On April 3, 1982, Gene was a member of Corinthian Lodge #16 F. & A.M. where he previously held the station of Tiler. He also served as an officer in the Lodge's Craftsman’s Club. He continued his travels in Freemasonary and was a past member of the Holy Royal Arch (Cyrus Chapter # 6), New Haven Consistory #7 A. and A. S. R. Of Freemasonary, Prince Hall Affiliation, Northern Jurisdiction U.S.A., Inc., and the Imperial Council A.E.A.O.N.M.S. of N. & S.A. Inc. Gene was a Thirty - second Degree (32⁰) Mason. He loved to cook for his Lodge as well as for his family and friends. He also loved sports and fishing. Gene raised two grandchildren, Kawana Brickhouse & Kenneth Brickhouse. He loved his family and three special friends, William (Bill) H. Williams, Windsor Teel, and Willard Hall. His sisters, Barbara Ann and LaVonne (Poosie) would call him every day to pray with him. He also had a special first cousin, Michael Wooten, who always helped him with anything he needed along with a special God-daughter, Desanae Jenkins. Gene was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ann Brickhouse-Newton, both his parents, his brothers, Connie Mike Newton and Mitchell Newton, son, Ronald Brickhouse. He leaves behind those to cherish his memories, his sisters, Evangelist Barbara Ann Newton, Norwalk, CT, Margaret Butler, Washington, DC, Evangelist Shirley Newton-Fields, Fayetteville, NC, Prophetess LaVonne Newton-Edwards, Farmville, NC, along with a host of family and friends in Farmville, NC; his loving children; son, Curtis Brickhouse; four daughters, Janice Brickhouse Murray, Giognatti Sellers, Alice Sonia Brickhouse, Valerie Tyson-Gibson, and son-in-law, William H. Murray and daughter-in-law, Diane Brickhouse, and one sister-in-law, Earlene Brickhouse-Scovens; He also leaves his many grandchildren to cherish his memories, Charlise Sellers, Sheena Sellers, Raven Gibson, Latoria Fogle Spain, Kawana Brickhouse, Kenneth Brickhouse, Todd Jones, Curtis Jr. Brickhouse, Laquanda Brickhouse, along with a host of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind 14 beloved great-grandchildren and three Godchildren. Gene was always the person who infused love and laughter into family and friends’ BBQs, birthdays, and holidays. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 21, 2020, at 10:00 AM, Baker Funeral Services Chapel, 84 South Main Street, Norwalk, CT. The family will receive guests from 9:00 AM until the time of service at the chapel. Interment will take place at Riverside Cemetery, 81 Riverside Ave, Norwalk, CT.
