Obituary of Ora Beatrice Harris
Please share a memory of Ora to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Ora (“Sue”) Beatrice Harris of Norwalk, Connecticut entered eternal rest on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at the age of 80. She was born in Fountain, North Carolina on February 22, 1940 to the late Louise Vines and Peter Harris. She was raised by her loving grandparents, the late Jaffie and Sattie Harris.
After graduating from H.B. Suggs High School in Farmville, NC, Sue started her life in Norwalk where she worked for Dietz and Co. for 20 years; Holson Company for 8 years; Maples Inn for 12 years; and retired from STAR, Inc. in 2005 after 20 years of service as a Residential Instructor for adult clients with special needs. Sue was very passionate about her work with STAR and continued to visit with clients following her retirement in 2005 up until last December when her health started to decline.
Sue was a lifelong member of Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ in Norwalk. For more than 40 years, she organized the church’s annual fundraiser, a bus trip to the Pennsylvania Dutch Country. She started a “candy ministry” at her church with the aim of raising money for the Junior Usher Board. She loved being an usher and was a very dedicated member of the Senior Usher Board and organized trips for the Junior Ushers each year.
Additionally, Sue started the Senior & Junior Usher Board at Miracle Temple for the Fairfield County Unit and has served in various roles, most recently as Treasurer.
Sue enjoyed family, especially the Harris Family Reunions and summer family barbeques she attended in Walton, New York, at the home of James Milton and family. She cherishes the sweet memories of her “High Street family” where she resided for many years. She was known for always visiting a church member or friend in need. Serving others, that is what she did. She always had a warm smile, generous heart and compassionate spirit. She was an active volunteer and supported the NAACP and many other organizations. She enjoyed long telephone conversations with her dear friends, gardening, road trips back to North Carolina and other places with her daughter, random pizza delights with her son and always found pleasure when she received visits from her grandson and family who referred to her as “Gigi”.
Sue is survived by her daughter, Pamela Harris, of Waterbury, CT; son, Alphonso Harris, of Norwalk, CT; and grandson, Christopher Harris (Valerie) of Shillington, PA along with two great grandchildren, Ezra and Simon; a sister, Gayle Harris (Rainer Felber), of Millis, Massachusetts; a great godson, Clifton Harris of Liberty, NY; and a number of other loving relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her brother, Peter (Billy) Harris, Jr.
Cherish the memories, celebrate her life, and find comfort in knowing she knew and loved the Lord.
The family wishes to thank all who cared for Sue during her transition to eternal life, to include the ViTAS Hospice Agency, caregivers of Daniel Care/CareFinders and a very special thanks to friends, family and the Miracle Temple Church family for their visits, prayers and spiritual support.
