David Russell Ryder, 83, of Brookline, Vermont, passed away unexpectedly at home on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Born on July 23, 1942, in Norwalk, Connecticut, David was the son of the late Russell and Julia Ryder. A graduate of Norwalk High School, Class of 1960, he went on to establish Ryder Building Inc. in Norwalk, where he built a reputation for quality craftsmanship and strong community ties. He was a longtime resident of Norwalk before retiring to Vermont in 2005.
David married his high school sweetheart, Paula Jakob, in 1961. The couple recently celebrated 64 years of marriage — a testament to their enduring love and partnership. In addition to being a devoted husband, David was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife Paula Ryder of Brookline, VT; daughters Tracey Magee and her husband Ed of Naugatuck, CT, and Marcie Ryder and her partner Normand Maurice of Norwalk, CT; granddaughters Devon D'Uva and her husband Joseph, and Megan Guiliano and her husband Anthony, both of Watertown, CT; grandsons Kristopher Whitteaker and Tyler Whitteaker, both of Norwalk, CT; and five beloved great-grandchildren: Grace and Ella D'Uva, and Ava, Jake, and Cole Guiliano. He was predeceased by grandsons Ryan Magee and Sean Whitteaker.
David was active in both his Connecticut and Vermont communities. He served as president of Norwalk Master Builders and was a 58-year member of the South Norwalk Boat Club. After moving to Vermont, he contributed as Road Commissioner for the Town of Brookline.
David found joy in snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, and riding his Harley with friends. He had a knack for fixing anything and always had a project on his workbench. David’s heart was in Vermont, where he built his home with his own hands, a true labor of love. He spent countless hours working in the yard, tending to the ponds and trails, and welcoming family gatherings. His greatest pride was his family, and he loved nothing more than having everyone together in the place he loved most.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, 92 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in David's memory may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
