Obituary of Delmore W. Spence

Mr. Delmore Wesley Spence Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on January 23, 2025 with family members by his side. Mr. Spence Sr. was born on April 11, 1941 with his twin sister Kathrine in Rochelle Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents. First, by his mother Mrs. Gladys (Presley) Spence at the age of four years old and later by his father as an adult; Mr. Joe Spence. He was reared by his grandparents after the passing of his mother. He was also preceded in death by six siblings: Charles and Carl (twins) Roger, Minnie, Jessie, Joe Jr, Roosevelt and son, Delmore Spence Jr. and stepson Mitchell Rogers. Mr. Spence graduated from Lincoln High School in Gainesville Florida. He attended Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach Florida as well as a technical college in Connecticut. After working various jobs in Connecticut, he began his long tenure of employment at the United States Postal Service in Stamford Connecticut. During his employment, he held several positions from mail carrier to ultimately retiring as a Floor Supervisor. He retired from the United States Postal Service with over 50 years of employment and received numerous accolades and awards for his various accomplishments. He was known for his hard work ethic at the Postal Service as well at his successful small business he began over 54 years ago. He was admired by many for his leadership qualities and his ability to work well with everyone by inspiring them to do their best. Mr. Spence is survived by his wife Willie Mae Spence, his daughter Sharon (Spence) Ferguson (Lionel Jr.), six grandchildren: Emma Bradley, Michelle Harrison (Michael), Robyn Brown, Delmore Spence III, Lionel Ferguson III, and Hannah Ferguson; eight great-grandchildren; five sisters: Kathrine (his twin sister), Rosa S. Rollins, Phyllis S. Benjamin, Susie A. Spence, and Gladys Wright, and several family members whom he loved including nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Spence has been a member of Union Baptist Church for over 50 years. During his membership, he had been a member of the Finance Committee. He will be remembered as a kind, gentle, generous, loving, friendly, and hardworking man. He will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and colleagues. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 10:00AM - 11:00AM followed by a service of celebration at 11:00AM at Union Baptist Church, 805 Newfield Ave., Stamford, CT. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Norwalk.
